Urodynamic Study

Measures bladder pressure — the number that predicts kidney risk.

Diagnostics & Testing

What is Urodynamic Study?

Fine lines measure the pressure inside the bladder as it is slowly filled, showing how much it holds, how compliant it is, and at what pressure it leaks.

Indications

Why It Is Asked For

This test is requested only when the answer would change what we do next.

  • Neurogenic bladder, most often with spina bifida or a spinal abnormality
  • Persistent wetting or failure of toilet training with other worrying signs
  • Before and after bladder surgery
  • Because a small, high-pressure bladder can be relatively dry and still be damaging the kidneys
Preparation

Before the Day

  • The urine must be free of infection
  • The bowel should be empty — constipation distorts the results
  • A bladder diary kept for a few days beforehand is genuinely useful
What Happens

On the Day

  • Fine catheters are placed in the bladder and back passage
  • The bladder is filled slowly while pressures are recorded
  • The child is asked to report sensation and to pass urine at the end
  • Around an hour; uncomfortable rather than painful
Results

What the Results Show

  • Reports capacity, compliance, unstable contractions and leak point pressure
  • High storage pressure is the finding that most predicts kidney damage
  • Guides medication, catheterisation and any decision about surgery
Safety

Is It Safe?

  • Mild stinging and a slight increase in infection risk, which is why antibiotic cover is often given
  • No radiation unless combined with X-ray imaging
FAQ

Common Questions

If your question is not here, send it on WhatsApp and the hospital team will answer.

Ask a question

Yes. Dryness does not prove the bladder is safe — a small, high-pressure bladder can be dry and still damaging the kidneys. This test is how that is detected.

A loaded rectum raises bladder pressure and distorts the readings, so treating it first makes the test meaningful.

A note from Pratheep Nursing Home. This page describes Urodynamic Study in general. It is not advice about your child, and it is not a consent form. What is right for your child, and what to expect afterwards, is decided only after examining them and is explained to you in person before anything is agreed.

Next Step

The pressure inside the bladder is the number that predicts kidney damage.

In a neurogenic bladder that one figure drives the whole plan, from medication to surgery. Bring previous studies so the change over time can be read.
